Tubecon Secures Contract for the Replacement of Baulk Bridge
Tubecon is pleased to announce our appointment by Wills Bros Group as the steel fabricator for the replacement of Baulk Bridge.
The project will see the replacement of the existing Baulk Bridge, which carries the B3181 over the River Culm. Originally constructed in 1924, the existing bridge has reached the end of its operational life and will be replaced with a new structure designed to provide a service life of 120 years. The B3181 is an important route connecting Cullompton and Exeter and also serves as a diversion route for the M5 motorway.
The new bridge will be constructed on a new alignment downstream of the existing crossing, alongside approximately 320 metres of new highway. This approach allows the existing bridge to remain operational for much of the construction programme, helping to minimise disruption for local communities and road users. The wider scheme also includes highway drainage improvements, a flood-relief culvert, upgraded pedestrian facilities, and ecological enhancements along the River Culm corridor.
Tubecon has been appointed to fabricate the structural steelwork for the new bridge and will work closely with Wills Bros Group and the wider project team throughout the delivery of the scheme. With extensive experience in bridge fabrication, Tubecon continues to support infrastructure projects across the UK, delivering complex steel structures that require careful planning and precision manufacturing.
Once the new bridge has been commissioned, the existing structure will be removed, improving flood conveyance and supporting the long-term resilience of the surrounding area.
The project represents a significant investment in Devon’s transport infrastructure and will provide a modern, resilient crossing that will serve the region for decades to come.
