Specialists in architecturally exposed steelwork, Tubecon, were the contractor of choice to fabricate and install two Wayfinding Gantries. The structures have been designed by Surface Architects for the games.
Tubecon has received official BOA (British Olympic Association) Designation and a license under their Supplier Recognition Scheme as: Supplier of Architectural Structural Steelwork (Olympic Park) to the London 2012 games. Particular fabrication skill and precision were required for this exciting project, qualities which Tubecon have the knowledge and expertise to deliver.
The wayfinding gantry structures combine historic vectors and iconic influences into a highly distinctive design that fits London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG’s) brief. Each form incorporates LED backlighting, creating a field of glowing beacons across the Stratford Park.
Six 7m high zone beacons, five 15m high major beacons and two 12m high entrance gantries were constructed from sustainably sourced fabrics and will be dismantled, recycled and reused post Games.
Tubecon used the latest laser profiling technology on these two overhead Wayfinding Gantries to form the complex cuts required to nest the tubular profiles together with millimetre accuracy to create this complex steel structure. The complex tubular trusses spanned in excess of 30 metres and were located on the London Olympic Park that formed part of the Stratford Gateway, helping to direct visitors to various venues. The structures weighed approximately 16 tonnes each and were dismantled and removed from the Park after the Games.
