Tubecon was appointed by Midwest Plant Ltd to design, fabricate and install the Pont y Milgy Footbridge in Wales, together with all associated works. The completed bridge provides a durable pedestrian crossing and demonstrates Tubecon's ability to deliver structural steel bridge projects where engineering expertise, logistics and installation planning are equally important.

The bridge is a 36 metre long Pratt truss structure, measuring 2.64 metres wide and weighing approximately 31 tonnes. The Pratt truss configuration was selected for its structural efficiency and suitability for longer spans, providing a robust solution capable of delivering long-term performance. To maximise durability, the steelwork was protected using a Type II Inland Difficult Access paint system, providing corrosion resistance and reducing future maintenance requirements throughout the bridge's service life.

A key challenge throughout the project was the transportation of the completed bridge to site. Restricted access along the surrounding Welsh road network meant that the bridge could not be transported as a single structure without exceeding the limitations of the available routes. This required the installation methodology to be considered during the design and fabrication stages, ensuring the bridge could be safely transported while maintaining programme requirements.

To overcome these constraints, Tubecon developed a delivery strategy that saw the bridge fabricated in two sections. Each half was transported separately before being accurately aligned and bolted together on site to form the complete structure. This approach reduced the transport length and overall load while maintaining the structural integrity of the finished bridge and allowing the installation programme to proceed efficiently.

Following assembly, the bridge was lifted into its final position using a Liebherr LTM1650 mobile crane. The crane's lifting capacity and reach enabled the fully assembled 31 tonne structure to be installed safely and accurately in a single controlled lifting operation, minimising disruption on site and ensuring the programme remained on schedule.

The successful delivery of the Pont y Milgy Footbridge reflects Tubecon's experience in the design, fabrication and installation of structural steel bridges. By integrating engineering, fabrication and logistics from the outset, the project team successfully overcame challenging site constraints to deliver a practical and durable solution that will provide a reliable pedestrian crossing for many years.
